Creating awareness in women to be the best life skills and livelihood manager during disasters.

Natural calamities mainly affect the poor community due to their unsafe infrastructure and poor living. In practice, poor women are the real household managers because they are responsible for arranging the stock of essentials; maintaining nutrition of children and managing livestock etc For these reasons, women’s groups of every village should by empowered first. In this episode, the focus is on overcoming knowledge and information poverty of poor women by empowering women’s groups.

Ensuring safety of children during disasters

Natural calamities mainly affect the poor community due to their unsafe infrastructure and poor living. Lower economic people rear animal with their campus for better livelihood. But at the calamity attack they lose their infrastructure and share their living rooms with children and animals which become more dangerous for children. In order to save the children from this hazardous situation proper child care and management with animals should be communicated to the community as advance information and knowledge. Secondly due to unavailability of fodder and other food items the milk production comes down and it directly affects the nutrition security of the children so the knowledge on food stock and proper animal management provided in advance may prepare the community to face such type of problems.

Reducing unsafe drinking water risk during disasters

Drinking water is a major problem during disasters and causes health challenges. Contamination of water creates many problems in the post- disaster period. Skin infections, diarrhoeal diseases and stomach problems are the major issues arising due to use of contaminated water during disasters. Use of properly treated and stored water is important to survive natural calamities. The community needs to be informed about the use of safe water during disasters and this warning should be shared with the community in advance in order to reduce the risk of water borne diseases. Due to various reasons, food and water got contaminated during disasters and diarrhoea like diseases affect the community. In this situation children are the most vulnerable and need the most attention, emphasizes the message of this episode.

Reducing diarrohea risk during disasters

Diarrhoea is a common health challenge which appears during the post-disaster period. Due to various reasons, food and water get contaminated and diarrhoea affects community living with children being the most vulnerable group.  To maintain the safety of the community, it is the prime duty of the people working on risk reduction to make efforts to prevent the possibility of spread of diarrhea. Awareness on hand wash, and consumption of safe food and water as preventive measures are the focus of this episode.
