Preventing violence against women ( Hindi)

Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread violations of human rights. It can include physical, sexual, psychological and economic abuse. This episode of Ek Duniya Ek Awaaz deals with the various steps taken by the government, civil society organisations and employers to prevent and denounce violence against women. Dr. Ranjana Kumari, Director of Centre for Social Research said male members have to play a critical role in reducing the incidents of violence against women.

Women of the capital city Delhi and other cities feel insecure while using public spaces and crowded public transports, and the problem also needs a long term change in mindset. A baseline survey reveals very clearly that being a woman is itself a risk factor in Delhi and that woman feel insecure in crowded public places, due to poor lighting on roads and lack of clean public toilets. A major section of slum dwellers in cities are women and reducing urban vulnerability needs to be integrated with urban planning and policy making. Through this radio programme students of Delhi University talk about how do they feel about their city.

The world today is witnessing the storming of male bastions by women. Women are moving ahead in all fields and are proving themselves as equal to men and many a times even better than them. But a dark side to this positive picture is painted by violence against women. In spite of having made great strides in various professional fields, women are today still victims of violence perpetrated by men. And a large number of them are victims of domestic violence. This makes for a chilling realization that many women are not safe even in their own homes. The origin of this problem can be traced to gender discrimination which is to be found across the world but is especially rampant across South Asia.

They do not want to involve women in developing the property. Though by law after the death of the husband the wife inherits half of his property and the other half goes to the children, what we often see is that it is the sons in the family that maintain the property and its benefits. Isn’t a woman’s effort to bring up her family is much more valuable than property?
