The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is organising a three day Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) this year that would hold discussions on various environment related issues. In one of the sessions based on water track, policy makers and scholars from all across the world would debate on how water resources can be used effectively and judiciously. Speaking to OneWorld, Mr. Anshuman, Associate Director of Water Resources Division, TERI says that people should know the importance of water and why one should use it judiciously and sensibly. Highlighting the significance of water conservation and rain-water harvesting techniques, Mr. Anshuman says that such techniques must be encouraged so as to reduce water shortage across the country. He also stressed on the proper implementation of government policies that would help in overcoming the shortage of water problems.

Dr Sunita Narain, Director-General, Centre for Science and Environment speaks about the increasing need of water in agriculture. In her exclusive interview with OneWorld South Asia, she talks about the enormity of water issues that India faces and how the government can help control it through intelligent and effective policies. "The question of water isn’t that simple, it is a complex question. The important issue is that everyone deserves clean and safe drinking water", said Dr Narain. Actor and social activist Rahul Bose also highlights the dire need of conserving water. Ramesh Negi, Chief Executive Officer, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) shares on the plans of the Delhi government to provide better water services to the citizens of in the capital. Mr. Negi also speaks about various steps taken by the DJB to ensure effective and efficient management of water. He highlights the installation of water meters and use of ICTs to monitor water supply and leakage. Citizens, through Resident Welfare Associations are also involved in the process of monitoring water wastage. World Water Day is celebrated on 22 March and aims to focus attention on the importance of freshwater and advocate for the sustainable management of water resources.
