Mission & Vission

<p>&lsquo;Sarang&rsquo; means harmony of colours. As the name suggests, the radio station looks at spreading harmony among its people while educating and promoting inter-religious, inter-cultural and inter-lingual harmony through its programmes.&nbsp;</p>

Genesis

<p>Radio Sarang was established as a means to reach out to the communities through radio. Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society throughSt. Aloysius College came forward to support the cause as Mangalore saw its first Community Radio Station come up.</p>

Thematic Focus

Community Radio Sarang @107.8 MHz broadcasts its programmes 24 x 7 round the clock daily beginning 5:00 am.

Languages of Broadcast: Kannada, Tulu, Konkani, English, Byari, Malayalam and Hindi

Yakshagana Kannada folk art of local area - dramatized One of the most important programmes was on shunning social evil habits using Yakshagana. It uses song and dance with powerful music – in association with a local Law College
Kanoonu Kacheri On Air Live Wednesday 6 pm Advocates/Law Professors discuss a law/ legal practice every week live.
Arogya Sparsha On Air - Live This is a regular weekly programme produced in association with a local medical centre.
Konkani Talks and music We encapsulate useful information in Konkani language – on language, culture, good community practices
Tulu Song Various local artists are brought to light, songs and cultural traditions are showcased

Programme

<p>Signature Programme: Mahila Sarang, Iduve Jeevana, Arogya Sarang, Pratidvani, Krishi Sarang, Yakshagana and Paaddana. Community Participation: The local artists involved in all the functions of the community. Colleges and schools from the community are also invited to the studio. They also contribute to programmes like Makkaledege Sarang (Sarang for Children) and Krishi Sarang (Sarang for Farmers). Innovations in Format: Local corporators are brought to the studio for live chats with common people. These programmes explain different schemes planned for the people and respond to the problems of infrastructure. These tools help people interact freely with their elected leaders.</p>

Partnership & Funding

<p>Funding and Partnerships The Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society gave the Community Radio Station financial aid to set up the Community Radio Station. St. Aloysius College has been supporting the initiative from the very inception of the Radio Station. The Karnataka government has also helped with financial assistance while DAVP empanelment has also enabled aid from the Information Department of Government of Karnataka.</p>

Impact & Stories

<p>The entire Mangalore community, irrespective of caste, creed and religion, has been very generous to share their culture and tradition, not to forget the age-old wisdom passed over from generation to generation. The community considersRadio Sarang as the radio of the community and run it by making their own programmes.&nbsp;</p>
