Bridging technology divide: IT for women and girls (Tamil)

This programme is based on the theme of this year's World Telecommunication Day and Information Society Day which focuses on women in the field of ICTs.

Mission & Vission

<p>Puduvai Vaani aims at creating awareness amongst people to improve their life styles by awakening, informing, enlightening, educating and entertaining its listeners. It achieves this by producing and airing programme on empowering women, students, the local fishermen community.</p>

Genesis

<p>The idea of a radio has its genesis in the Indian Ocean Tsunami that took many lives of people residing in the coastal zones. Pondicherry University felt there was a need to equip communities with information on precautionary measures to be taken when a warning is issued and how to react in the event of a disaster.</p>

Thematic Focus

Puduvai Vaani @107.8 MHz broadcasts its programmes for 9 hours on weekdays and 12 hours on weekends. On weekdays from 6:00 am – 10:00 am; 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm and on weekends from 6:00 am – 6:00 pm.

Programme

<p>Signature Programme: UngalaiThedi (Live Programme), IlamaiVaasal (Youth Programme), ArivomAangilam (English Learning), AriviyalUlagam (Science Programme), MangayarCholai (Women&rsquo;s Programme). Community Participation: PuduvaiVaani has invited applications from community members for attending an audition to participate in its programmes. For instance a National Science Day Competition for the students from schools and college and the community drawn a huge number of students and participation has increased with every passing year. 460 students participated in 2012 as against 245 in 2011. Local Non-Government Organizations (NGO) and Government departments support in programme generation. Innovations in format: Year 2012 has been celebrated as the Year of Mathematics in India in memory of the Mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. As part of this, Puduvai Vaani has broadcast a series &ldquo;Today&rsquo;s Formula in PuduvaiVaani&rdquo; through 2012 based on a One-day-one-formula concept.</p>

Partnership & Funding

<p>Funding and Partnerships: The Community Radio was initiated with funding from the Pondicherry University. Presently it is funded by the Pondicherry University, advertisements from DAVP and Government-sponsored projects.</p>

Impact & Stories

<p>Parents feel that students are meaningfullyengaged in the summer camps organised by Puduvai Vaani. Simultaneously, school and college syllabus has been converted into audio format.<br />Similarly, SHG members were chosen to undergo computer training imparted by the Adult and Continuing Education Department of the Pondicherry Universitysupportedby Puduvai Vaani CRS.</p>
