With a population of over one billion, and more than 4.5 million people infected with “HIV/AIDS”, the HIV epidemic in India will have a major impact on the overall spread of HIV in Asia, the Pacific, and around the world. India is second only to South Africa in terms of the overall number of people living with the disease. India has had a sharp increase in the estimated number of "HIV" infections, from the first reported case in 1986 in Madras (a commercial sex worker), then escalating to several thousand in the early 1990s to around five million in 2003. National estimates have come under scrutiny and are generally considered to be underestimations of the true absolute number of persons living with HIV in India.
