TRICHY: National Institute of Technology, Trichy (NIT-T) has become the first among NITs in the country to launch a community radio to cater to the needs of students, staff and neighbouring villages.
The logo for the channel, NITT FM 90.8MHz, was released as part of the official launch by Ashok Sundaresan, president, Small and Medium Industries Association (BHELSIA) on Monday. Speaking on the occasion he said that community radio needs to be participatory and service-oriented and urged students to focus more on entrepreneur skills-related programmes through the community radio.
Sundaresan advised students to look into the possibilities of obtaining international funding through agencies such as United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for sustaining the radio. In addition to providing a platform for NIT-T students, the community radio is likely to focus on education, health, sanitation, socio-economic development of the local community.
