Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Mandapam Station Commander Vijay said that ‘Kadal Osai,’ the community radio launched by Nesakarangal Trust, would come in handy for the ICG to communicate with fishermen in a better way when they were fishing on the high seas.
Addressing a function got up to launch the community radio service here on Saturday, he said the ICG which had been operating in the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay for nearly four decades, had established a close rapport with all stakeholders and the new radio service would come in handy to strengthen the ties.
Speaking on the occasion, Congress leader Karti Chidambaram said community radios which were very popular for their talk shows in the US, and even responsible for Donald Trump’s victory in the recent Presidential elections, had been given a raw deal in India. Thanks to the discriminatory policy, FM and community radios had been denied permission in the country to air news, he said and questioned the logic behind prohibiting private radios from airing news bulletins when people had free access to news in the social media.
He said ‘Kadal Osai’ would emerge successfully only if the local business community and hoteliers extended their patronage by way of advertising and make it commercially viable.
